Baguettes and Butterflies: The Very Proper Spring Picnic in NYC

The picnic.  It's proved itself the epitome of the springtime celebration for millennia. Whether you have your own elaborate gear, or prefer to let the professionals prepare a decadent meal, here are some ideas to make it magical.

The folks at Perfect Picnic definitely know what they're doing. If the name itself isn't proof in the (delicious) pudding, then I don't know what is.  Perfect Picnic has been around for a while, since 2011 to be exact, and they've spent the past 11 years perfecting the art of the picnic. Their picnic packages range from a "grab & go" for couples or families, to all the necessities for birthday parties serving more than twenty, and everything in between.  Delivery isn't included in most packages, but Doordash is happy to help if you prefer to find a spot in the park and wait.

If your plan is to picnic in Central Park, (and really, what better place to do it?) don't hesitate to contact the park directly for a gorgeous basket of goodies with blanket included. They also have several options for sizes, foods, and levels of luxury, so this seems like a no-brainer if Central Park is your choice of setting.

Perhaps you'd prefer trying your favorite restaurant's take on the classic picnic basket? The guide to all yumminess, Eater, has compiled a list of NYC eateries (some of which are Michelin-starred) that offer picnics. They range from Aquavit to Pastrami Queen and many more, and each restaurant must be contacted directly for specifics about their picnic offerings.

Of course, there are those of us who like to roll up our sleeves and do the dirty work ourselves.  What to prepare for your DIY picnic foods? Please don't forget the humble baguette. Few breads hold up to being premade into sandwiches, left to sit, and a bit of tossing around better than a baguette. Slice and serve with a selection of cheeses, or butter both sides and layer some deli meats and the fixings in between for the quintessential picnic sandwich.  A container of sliced fruits is the perfect compliment to all types of sandwiches, salads, and charcuterie, and makes a light and tasty dessert. Lastly, don't forget a bottle of wine and some cups or glasses.  Most stores sell plastic stemless wine glasses that won't break and won't take up too much room in your fancy basket.

However you choose to plan your picnic, don't forget to bring people you care about.  And a frisbee.  What a perfect day in NYC.
