In the heart of New York harbor, 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, Governors Island is a true New York paradise. This gem of an island remains open through November 1st, 2020, so don't miss your chance to get there!

Governors Island boasts a fascinating history dating back to Dutch colonial times. It served as a military outpost, fortification and facility for centuries, until it was declared a New York City historic district in 1996.

It opened to the public in 2005, when the city of New York outdid itself in creating a unique center for art and recreation for its citizens. Come and check out:

OUTLOOK HILL

Rising 70 feet, Outlook hill offers a winding, accessible path to the summit and a granite stone 'scramble' for climbers large and small. At the top, you'll see a panoramic view of the Statue of Liberty, New York harbor, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and the New York City skyline.

HAMMOCK GROVE

Imagine swinging in a red hammock, under a blue sky, surrounded by lush foliage. This IS an experience you can have less than a mile from lower Manhattan!

More adult fun can be had at the Veuve Cliquot Movie Sleepovers, a "glamping" retreat. An overnight movie sleepover for grown-ups, showings include New York themed classics like "When Harry met Sally" and "Breakfast at Tiffanys". ART

Governor's Island is a haven for the arts. Among the permanent installations are:

 The May Room by Shantell Martin, a historical vignette set inside a former chapel that uses Martins signature black and white drawings to illustrate the buildings' history.

Cabin by Rachel Whitehead, a concrete cast of the interior of a simple cabin, is situated on Discovery Hill, overlooking New York harbor.

Never Comes Tomorrow by Jacob Hashimoto is a virtual time tunnel between the islands historic district and the newly designed park.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Picnicking is allowed on Governors Island, but there are also several restaurants. Island Oyster offers easygoing summer fare and a gorgeous waterfront bar. Taco Vista is the place for tacos and Margaritas! Try Fauzia's Heavenly Delights for tasty Jamaican food. And if you're just in the mood for a cup of coffee, Joe's Coffee roasts their own beans in Long Island City.
