Wildlife Refuges in New York

New York is the biggest urban agglomeration in the US, with an average of 66 million visitors thronging the city every year. And just like any other big city in the world, New York is never short of things to do or places to explore. From the Empire State Building to the Museum of Natural History, New York residents have a myriad of options when it comes to exploration.

But there are more exclusive spots and secret gems to explore in the city that you didn't even exist. Let's track them down and see if any are fit for your next family excursion or weekend getaway.

1. The Ramble: Lush Woodland in Central Park

Central Park is synonymous with its sprawling greenery, which remains the main attraction for many New Yorkers. But one hardly-known spot between the 73rd and 74th streets makes a perfect spot for weekend getaways. The Ramble features lush woodland. The wooden benches in the spot give a spectacular view of The Lake and charming birds. The place is open every day of the week from 6 am to 1 am—enough time to watch all the birds until they retreat to their habitat.

2. Island Oyster on Governor's Island

If you're not taking a weekend stroll in Central Park, Island Oyster sounds like a perfect chilling spot for Sundays. The hidden gem is so serene and tranquil that you'll hardly know you're in the middle of New York's hustle and bustle. The breeze from the Hudson River and the striking city's skyline are worth the $2 ferry charge to the spot from downtown Manhattan. Island Oyster is still closed but will reopen in May.

3. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens

Government buildings and middle-class residential neighborhoods are what probably linger in your mind every time someone mentions Jamaica, Queens. But there is a vast 9,155 acres of serene wildlife refuge perfect for hiking, bird watching, and even turtle nest exploration. At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, you interact with plants and animals in their most natural habitat. The place is open around the clock.
