This past year has been a long strange journey, but in New York City, it finally seems the end is in sight. While life is far from back to normal, there are signs that life is beginning to return to the Big Apple. While not everything is ready to return, Broadway won't be presenting shows until the middle of September, those business and venues that are open seem to be thriving. Here are a few places that are open and ready to roll.

Gyms

Gyms and exercise venues were perhaps the most hesitant to shut down as they could not provide their service virtually. Once given the greenlight they opened their doors with the promise of maintaining high levels of cleanliness and enforcing CDC guidelines for covid safety. Here a few gyms that are up and running.

  • Blink – over 100 locations and a cool little graph on each one's website to let you know how many people are in the gym in real time.

  • Planet Fitness – over 100m locations in New York alone and most are back to being open 24 hours a day. Real time crowd meter on website and strict adherence to CDC guidelines.

Food and Drink

Because it is very hard to eat or drink with a mask on, restaurants and bars have been slower to open for indoor dining. Currently places within the city are allowed to be open at 50% capacity but as of May 19th they can return to 100%.  Here are a few anxious to have you back.

  • Chick Chick – instead of focusing on a nationality of food, this restaurant focuses on chicken prepared in the style of many different cultures.

  • Broken Shaker –this rooftop bar is known for its unique cocktails, one of which is called, "Per My Last E-mail"

Kid Friendly

If you think you had a hard time being trapped in your home, consider a child's perspective. Thankfully kid friendly venues are reopening too.

  • Zoos – there are four zoos in NYC and all have reopened with limited hours. Tickets must be bought in advance and specific time blocks reserved.

  • Aquarium – like the zoos, all tickets must be purchased in advance, and you can only enter at the time specified on the ticket.

Entertainment

Although Broadway is not reopening yet, many other entertainment venues are. These include both indoor and outdoor arenas and nightclubs.

  • Bounce Sporting Club – this place manages to combine nostalgia with the best of modern sports watching. No dance floor but plenty of room to stay safely spread out.

  • Luna Park – this Coney Island amusement park has been a NYC staple for generations. They opened at partial capacity on April 9th, and they are so excited to have people strolling the boardwalk and enjoying the rides and food again.

NYC is starting to come to life again. These are just a few of the many, many businesses that are back and thriving.
