Need a Break? Visit the 3 Best Waterfalls of NY
Everyone needs a break from time to time. But 2020 has been an unprecedented year! Many New Yorkers have had to cancel their vacation plans, and we're all facing state-wide travel concerns. The good news is that we can still travel in the state without triggering quarantine requirements! So load up your ride. It's time for a day trip to one of New York State's incredible waterfalls!
The 3 Best Waterfalls in New York State
1. Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, NY
We've blogged about Niagara Falls before, and we don't want to sound like a broken record. But any hard-core waterfall explorer will tell you that Niagara Falls is the best waterfall, not only in our state but also in our nation. And arguably, it's the most magnificent waterfall on the planet. Plus, it's only about eight hours away from NYC by car.
Niagara Falls is three separate waterfalls, so there is always something new to do. So even if you've been there a dozen times, it's still an adventure. 2020 is an excellent year to see the falls, as there is limited international tourism. That means NO CROWDS!
2. The Eternal Flame in Orchard Park, NY
If you're looking for a more intimate waterfall experience, check out The Eternal Flame. This small waterfall is one-of-a-kind because it boasts a natural gas vein in the shale behind the waterfall.
You'll need to make a light hike through a creek, so this waterfall isn't wheelchair accessible, and you'll probably get wet. But once you get there, you'll see something extraordinary — a natural flame behind a sparkling waterfall!
Some days the flame is like a little candlelight. Other days it looks like a flame-thrower! Every once in a while, the flame will be extinguished, but you can light the flame with a lighter — just keep it dry going behind the waterfall. Best of all, "The Flame" is only about seven hours away from our Manhattan offices.
3. The Taughannock Falls in Trumansburg, NY
Finally, Taughannock Falls is less than five hours away. While this author has not yet had the chance to visit this gem, the Taughannock Falls State Park website says this tall waterfall plunges 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge. It's one of the tallest waterfalls in the nation, so it's high on our list.
Visitors experience spectacular views both above the waterfall and below it. Cabins and campsites overlook Cayuga Lake, with a marina, boat launch and beach to explore. A multi-use trail for hiking and cross-country skiing winds past sledding slopes and natural ice-skating ponds. It's a natural playground all year long.
