Discover the Strangest Museums in New York City

One of the things New York City is most famous for is its world class museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art compete for top honors, but the Whitney Art Museum and the Frick Collection are not far behind. The Guggenheim is famous for its shape. The Natural History Museum is famous for the Blue Whale Suspended from the ceiling. There are also the Museum of the American Indian, Ellis Island, the Tenement Museum, and Ground Zero.

But New York City is big enough to include scores more museums, including some very unique and even unusual ones. Some are very grounded in the New York City experience such as the Museums of American Finance, the American Gangster, NYC Transit, Skyscrapers, and the Waterfront Barge.

Here is a brief look at just a few of the more distinct and fascinating museums in New York City.

Torah Animal World

In Borough Park, Brooklyn is the largest Hasidic taxidermy display in the world, inspired by Noah's Ark and founded by Orthodox Rabbi Shaul Simon Deutsch. Look for the stuffed moose head on the side of a brownstone at 41st street and 16th avenue.

Mmuseumm

This museum features items of American pop culture and history below the notice of the curators at the Smithsonian, including a shoe thrown at Bush. bullet-proof Disney backpacks, a Corn Flake taxonomy, vomit art, and items mistaken for bombs, such as a stuffed pony, a lit up personal massager, and duct-taped Taco Bell. The museum is in a Tribeca freight elevator that holds three people - but it has hosted bar mitzvahs and weddings.

Larger New York City museums full of similar curios are: the City Reliquary in Williamsburg and Treasures in the Trash in East Harlem. Learn more about elevators at the Elevator Historical Society Museum in Long Island City.

Museum of Feelings

If we were to survey a hundred people and ask them what city would likely have a museum of feelings, Rio or Roma might come to mind, probably not New York City. But for every fugedaboudit NYC shrug, there is someone in the City expressing a feeling or two, like "I'm walkin' here!" This museum offers an immersive experience, so visitors should prepare to interact with the sensational exhibits. The exterior has an interesting feature. It acts as a mood ring showing red when social media trends in the five boroughs are optimistic, green when they are happy.

Body Worlds: Pulse

This museum features dead human bodies, but never fear that the corpses might animate and start the zombie apocalypse. They are preserved and solidified by a process called plastination invented by  anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagen. You can't miss this one at discovery Times Square. There is also a Museum of Morbid Anatomy in New York City.

Of course, there are many other odd museums in New York City worth a visit, such as Museums of Sex, Ice Cream, Houdini, Mathematics, the American Numismatic Society, and the Earth Room, a room filled with earth.
