It's Snowing in NYC: It's Beautiful or is it?

The Hollywood depiction of a snowy day in NYC is often cast with sprinkles of light dusting that covers the cascading skyscrapers. Somehow, this light dusting also only seems to plague the sides of the walkways and no matter how often the clusters of thousands of folks walk through it, it is also pristinely white. This happens only in the movies, however. The reality of snow is much more daunting in NYC.

Reality is Much Less Pristine

With an average snowfall of around 25 inches, the people stomping through the winter scenes can expect snow up to their kneecaps. As snow falls throughout the winter season, it creates different types of snow formations as the snowfall melts and freezes. This means that often the snow underneath the freshly fallen snowfall is more compacted and often holds secret layers of ice. This compacted snowfall can be safely walked on without your feet falling through. Great, right? Wrong. This means that as you are walking, at any moment, NYC could decide to throw you a sheet of ice under that freshly fallen debauchery falling from the skies. Imagine walking to your office space just to go sliding down the sidewalk and end up a muddy, murky mess, because as the thousands of New Yorkers parade the winter streets, the snow becomes filthy and mushy. It is no longer a beauty to look at, as it turns brown with slushy dirt.

Snow also comes with a heavy dose of hard work. Salt trucks run by the state of New York have to drive through the snow-laden streets of New York City to drop salt along the asphalt and keep the streets safe for drivers. This means only the streets noticed by New York state are salted, while many back streets get left out of the loop. Businesses also have to shovel snow from walkways and parking lots.

Snowshoeing

When striding through snowfall, it can be helpful to wear a good pair of snowshoes. Recreation snowshoes are the best fit for all the new winter hiking enthusiasts, and when you find the perfect pair, upstate New York holds some of the best spots for snowshoeing. You could traverse many mountainous landscapes such as St. Regis Mountain and Mount Baker. Snowshoeing to the top of a mountain is one sure way to be able to enjoy beautiful scenes of snowfall untouched by thousands of human shoes. You can keep yourself dry wearing a snowsuit and the right pair of snowshoes, since they compact the snow beneath your feet to keep you on top of the snowfall.

Concluding Thoughts

Snow sucks to traverse when you live in the city. Untouched snowfall is what makes for a fresh, serene scene that hundreds of people seek. Everything has its place in the world, including snow. It's just that in New York, snow's place is only in Upstate New York.
